When you bring your new puppy home, you will need to be prepared to dedicate a lot of time over the next few months, and especially over the next few weeks to housebreak him. If you can, try to get a few weeks off of work, or at least organise a rota in your household for housebreak duties.
Now is not the time to be simply going to work all day and leaving your new pup to his own devices. He will never learn anything that way. A dog is a [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] big commitment, and you need to make sure that you are ready for it. And especially do not leave your dog in a crate or a cage all day whilst you go to work. This is simply cruel.
If your dog has an accident inside the house, try not to tell him off unless you can actually catch him in the act. If you tell him off five [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] minutes after making a mess, he will think that it is the mess that upsets you and he may then start making a mess in hidden places, like behind the sofa.
Until your dog learns that it is actually the act [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] of making the mess inside the house that upsets you, and not just the mess itself, you will need to play by these rules. Otherwise you could create a 'secret pooper!'
Although it may seem like an overwhelming task now to devote so much time to training your puppy, it will be worth it in the long run, as he will turn out to be very obedient and you will have very few mishaps with him in the future.
If more than one member of the household is to be involved in the housebreaking, then make sure that everyone follows the same routines, uses the same words or [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] phrases, and takes your dog to the same part of the garden each day to poop.
Housebreaking usually takes about three or four months of intense work, depending on breed; but whatever the breed it shouldn't take any longer than six months.
More than anything you need to be consistent in order to obtain successful results. You shouldn't allow your puppy to do something one day that you are going to not let him do the next day. Once he feels he can get away with something once, he will keep trying to find a way to get away with it again! He will also get confused, and the housebreaking process can take longer to properly sink in with him.
Remember that positive encouragement and praise when your puppy does something right is a million times better than negative reprimanding when he has done something wrong. Negative behaviour will only encourage your dog to develop psychological problems, become secretive and scared. Remember that dogs have thoughts and feelings just like us and although sometimes they get things wrong, all they ever want to do is please us.
Following are some of the golden rules of [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] housebreaking:
- Always let your puppy outside [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] just after eating or drinking, after an exercise period, first thing in the morning and last thing at night. - Look out for signs during the day that your pup is getting ready to go to the toilet. Tell-tale signs include standing, whining or barking at the door, sniffing at the floor, walking in circles, arching his back with an erect tail [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] or starting to squat. - [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] Try not to leave your pup alone in the house for anything more than two hours [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] until they are at least one [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] year old. - You can use a crate or cage, especially when you can't always keep your eye on them, but never leave them in there any longer than two hours at a time. - Never [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] shout at your dog or hit them for doing something wrong. Just a simple 'no,' with a stern tone will suffice. Your puppy will know when you're not happy with him and can easily tell the difference in your tone of voice from a more high-pitched, happy and congratulatory tone. - If your dog has an accident try to clean it up thoroughly with a disinfectant that will completely remove the odour, otherwise your dog may go again in the same place as the [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] scent of his previous defecation will encourage him.
